Tattoo aftercare
Most tattoos that age badly were not tattooed badly — they were healed badly. This is the whole routine, and it is short.
The first 48 hours
Leave the covering on for as long as we tell you on the day — it depends on the dressing we used, so follow what we said rather than what the internet says.
Then wash it with clean hands, lukewarm water and a neutral soap. Pat it dry with kitchen roll, not a towel. Towels hold bacteria and catch on the surface.
The next two weeks
Wash it twice a day and apply a thin layer of cream after each wash. Thin. A thick layer suffocates the skin and slows everything down.
No pool, no sea, no bath, no sauna, no gym mats against it. Showers are fine.
It will itch and it will peel. Do not scratch it and do not pull the flakes off — that is how you take pigment with them.
Forever, after that
Sunscreen. Sun is the single biggest reason old tattoos look faded and muddy, far more than time itself. Factor 50 on exposed pieces in summer is not overkill.
When to call us
Spreading redness, heat, swelling that gets worse instead of better after day three, pus, or a fever. Those are signs of infection, not of healing — contact us and see a doctor. Do not wait it out.

How long does a tattoo take to heal?
The surface closes in about two weeks. The skin underneath keeps settling for a month or two, which is why a tattoo can look slightly dull around week three and then sharpen up again. That is normal.
Can I go to the beach or the pool?
Not while it is healing. Soaking a fresh tattoo and exposing it to sun are the two fastest ways to lose detail and invite infection. Once healed, sunscreen is what keeps it looking like it did on day one.
It is peeling and some colour came off. Is it ruined?
Peeling is part of healing and the flakes carrying pigment is normal — the ink that matters sits deeper than the layer coming away. Do not pick at it. If something still looks wrong once it has healed, come in and we will look at it.
